Dinner candles are perhaps what many of us envisage as the candle. But is there just one style of dinner candle or is there much more to choose from? And when we burn those candles at the dinner table do we have to put up with the smoke and mess of the candle wax?

Sherwood Dinner Candle

Sherwood Dinner CandlesThe classic candle for use in candelabra as a dinner candle has to be the Sherwood dinner candle. Available as a 10 inch or 12 inch candle the Sherwood candle is manufactured by Price's candles who were established in 1830 and since 1840 Price's has been, and still remains, a supplier to the UK monarch and the Prince of Wales.

The Sherwood dinner candle was selected by Princess Victoria for her wedding to Prince Albert and is still used by the British Royal Household for state occasions.

Colours of the Sherwood dinner candle include White, Ivory (most popular colour), Black, Evergreen, Midnight Blue, Red and Wine Red.

Two types of Sherwood candle are available. Firstly there is the “wrapped Sherwood Dinner Candle” available in smaller quantities and manufactured using a candle wax that can be used with Candle Shades. Alternatively Sherwood dinner candles can be bought in bulk quantities but these are classed as unwrapped and must not be used with shades as there is a danger of the shades setting on fire.

Venetian Candle | Taper Candle

Venetian Tapered Dinner CandleAnother classic shape that looks well in candle holders on the dinner table is the Venetian candle or Taper candle. The latter name describes this simple but effective candle well that comes in two heights, 8 inch and 10 inch. Colours of the tapered Venetian candles include Evergreen, Ivory, White, Red, Wine Red, Midnight Blue, Gold and Silver.

Barley Twist Candle | Spirette Candle

Spirette Candle or Barley Twist CandleInstantly recognisable is the Barley Twist candle or as some may know it the Spirette Candle. The title tells all without much else to say other than these decorative candles come in a range of colours, Evergreen, Ivory, Midnight Blue and Green.

Beeswax Dinner Candle

Beeswax Dinner CandlePerhaps the ultimate in dinner candles are the Beeswax Dinner Candles. These quality individually hand-made beeswax dinner candles from Price's Candles Heritage range contain 100% natural beeswax. They are not cheap candles but you would not expect hand made candles that are all bees wax to be so. The bonus of these candles is the clean beeswax scent that they impart to a room.

Church Candles and Altar Candles

Church CandlesNot thought of as dinner candles but certainly can be used as a decorative centre piece for a table are Church Candles and Altar Candles. These candles are the classic pillar candle shape and look well when burned individually or a variety of sizes grouped together. The Church candles contain bees wax and therefore do cost more and are yellow in colour where the Altar candles are white.

Altar CandlesWhat is constant with all the candles mentioned above is that they are clean burning and dripless. To be clean burning the candles must not be lit and be standing in a draft otherwise they produce black smoke otherwise the décor of your dining room should not suffer. Stand the candles upright and the candle wax will burn down inside the candle rather than pour down the outside if the candle and onto your table.

With such a variety of dinner candles available you just have to use your imagination to create your ideal dinner table setting.
